Palm Care

Choose the best palm for your space

Understanding the environment that you plan to plant into is important when choosing the best species for your space.  Have a look at the soil where you plan to plant, is it heavy and wet clay soil? or sandy and free draining?  Check out the immediate surroundings of your planting site, is there an overhead canopy for sun protection? or a fence / hedge close by for shelter from prevailing wind? Is your planting sites subject to severe frosts or snow? Is your site coastal, is salt likely to be a factor?

In order to get the best results from planting it is wise to choose plants that will thrive in your conditions.  Well situated plants are less susceptable to pests and disease and require less attention while providing maximum impact.

We have a selection of palms from all over the world, from Mexico to China, New Zealand has the most southern growing indigenous palm in the world, the Chatham Island Nikau.  There is a palm to suit every space, whatever your conditions.

Outdoor Planting Tips

  • Dig a hold at least twice the size of the planter bag
  • Plant into good quality compost, prepare hole with a handful of blood & bone or fish meal.  Plant on a mound if possible
  • Stake the palm if it is tall or on a windy site.  Remove stakes when the root system has been established and the palm is firm in the ground
  • Water thoroughly when planted.  Water daily during establishment period
  • Mulch or bark around the base of your palm helps to retain available moisture
  • Feed your palm in its first spring on site, with six month slow release fertiliser

Indoor Plant Tips

  • Always ensure your plants have plenty of water, don't let them dry out.  Lower leaves will brown off with dry air and not enough water
  • Fertilise sparingly, a small amount when the plant is actively growing, too much can cause fertiliser burn
  • Do not use oil based products to shine the leaves, this will cause damage in the form of brown spots or lesions
  • To wash the foliage use lukewarm water without any cleaners added.
  • Indoor varieties grow best in a warm environment with natural air flow, keep away from air conditioning and dehumidifying units
  • Repot in the warmer months, however palms like some pot restriction, try not to over pot
