Buying and Selling Private Palm Trees

When selling a palm out of your garden there is a popular misconception that they are worth very large sums of money.

Prior to palms being introduced, the average gardener grew plants to enjoy them without placing a value on them for resale.  For some reason palms have started a trend of – “how much can I get for this plant”, unfortunately people are overlooking the value of beauty they provide to their garden.

The difference between buying a relocated palm and a palm from a respected grower is enormous; hence to buy a palm from a grower can seem to be a costly experience depending on the plant of choice.

However, relative to the time it to takes to grow a good size palm tree, in our case average 5-8 years, and the resources involved the cost to consumer is actually very justified.

What you get from a grower

  • Professionals with in-depth knowledge in their field
  • Advice on planting and ongoing care
  • People who grow from seed / seedling, spending years providing environments suitable for each type of plant grown
  • Insect / disease control from young
  • Appropriate nutrient care from young
  • The knowledge, training and machinery required to remove plants from in ground positions and relocate with minimal damage
  • Huge selections of plants grown professionally in bags, providing the public with well adjustable premium condition palms that are easy to manage and will grow with minimal setback, usually with great success in your garden
  • Advice on which palms will suit your specific situation
  • Plants can be guaranteed

You would not have access to the services above through a private sale and it is very likely that the seller would not have experience removing palms from the ground.  If done incorrectly this in turn can cause irreparably damage to the root systems, that can lead to its demise.

The bigger the palm, the larger the machinery required to extract and the cost of hiring this machinery is relative.  To remove a 5 metre palm from a residential site can cost $1000’s in labour and machinery.  Health and safety issues also become a factor with machinery, labour and property.   This needs to be logically taken into account when asking for imbursement.

The risk and cost to the purchaser is high.

There are professionals who specialise in the removal and relocation of fully mature palms.  Some varieties may be very sought after at certain times and luck may fall your way with monetary gain, however this type of situation is not guaranteed.

The best rule of thumb is to ask questions when buying palms, an educated buyer will be satisfied with the choice he or she makes.  Find out if you are planting the right palm for your position to ensure it is still suitable when fully grown, this will help you enjoy it long term and the last thing you will every want to do is sell it.
